NGS Herefordshire Spring Newsletter
Spring may have sprung but predicting the weather has not become any easier. Our garden openers have been dodging showers to mow the lawn, weeding vigorously as the sun gives everything a boost and dragging pot plants back inside as hail and frost beckon. But rest assured that when you go out garden visiting the flowers will be showing off and the tea and cake will be ready and waiting.
As May approaches there are certainly plenty of gardens to choose from – too many to give full details here – so do check out the NGS website. The Herefordshire gardens can be found HERE.
Early in the month you will be able to take in the views over Bodenham Lakes as three neighbouring gardens open as a group called ‘Dinmore Gardens’ on 3rd and 4th May. Also on 3rd May is Lower House Farm near Tenbury Wells. It is an award-winning country garden that also opens By Arrangement for groups.
On 10th May is Archways at St Owen’s Cross in the south of the county. Pretty as a picture as you enter through a glorious wisteria archway, you will find many little corners of delight.

Full details of Archways can be seen HERE.
Visit Hereford Cathedral Gardens on 15th May, Netherwood Manor at Stoke Bliss on 16th and 17th, Bury Court Farmhouse at Wigmore on the 17th (but with more dates later in the summer too) and The Nutshell in Goodrich also on 17th May.
Moors Meadow at Collington opens on 18th May (and with more dates later too). It is a multi award winning seven acre hillside garden. Sturdy footwear is recommended but it rewards plant lovers, organic gardeners and wildlife fans in equal measure.

Full details of Moors Meadow can be found HERE
The outstanding Lower Hope at Ullingswick opens on 21st May. You can catch the last opening at Wainfield, Peterstow on the 24th and Coddington Vineyard on the 25th. Arrow Cottage, a relaxed country garden near Weobley is open on 24th and 25th May. Ivy Croft at Ivington Green is open every Wednesday throughout May, so there are plenty of opportunities to catch this garden gem.
Closing the month on 31st May is Sheepcote at Putley. And last, but by no means least, is a new garden called Tankard Walls all the way back to where we started near Bodenham. Flowing round a classical 1930s house, built for Elinor Parr of Croft Castle, this beautiful 2 acre garden has a sweeping driveway, deep mixed borders around the croquet lawn, terraces, rose garden, woodland, topiary, orchard and a wonderful lily pond.

Full details of Tankard Walls can be seen HERE.
After all that garden visiting we are sure that you will return home suitably inspired. If so, you can find our May gardening tips HERE.
Now you almost certainly know that your garden admission fee and kind donations help support some of the nation’s most loved and respected nursing and health charities. What you may not know is that the National Garden Scheme also gives grants to help community gardening projects. This year we have given almost £300k to support 118 such projects which we are delighted to say includes the Haygrove Community Gardens in Ross-on-Wye (pictured below).

That is about all we can squeeze in this month. It is back into the garden now for us before our next round of garden visits and cake eating get underway. As always, please do forward this newsletter to neighbours, friends or other members of any local club or society to which you belong.
